Lyrics Born Meeting

Japan's best Rap crew "Kaminari" (made up of members of Microphone
Pager, Lamp Eye and others) do a monthly show at Tokyo's Club Yellow
on around the 3rd thursday of every month. During one freestyle session
where every MC in the house steps to the mike to display their skills,
up comes who, but Lyrics Born, of Blackalicious. The crowd stares in
silence. They're unaccustomed to seeing someone rapping in English on the
Yellow stage, curious about who the hell this guy is (Blackalicious
is relatively unknown here), and not sure how to react to lyrics that
they've never heard in a style they've never seen (though one local
rapper I know told me that he thought he sounded like a Heiroglyphics
copy). It turns out that Lyrics Born is a friend of an acquaintance,
comes to Japan twice a year to visit family (his father is Japanese),
and for (Solesides) business, and has been watching the scene off and
on for a while now. He even mentioned perhaps using local rapper Twigy
on a future album project among other things). It was interesting to
talk with him, but unfortunately my ride was in a hurry to leave, so I
ended up ducking out the door after only a five minute talk.
What a trip!
