Yesterday, I bought a book called "Soul Music: Who's Who" by
Ralph Tee, who was associate editor for Blues and Soul magazine.
It is an large index of every soul artist and includes a small
biodiscography for each one of them. No pictures, just the
essential facts. The index is in alphabetical order.

It was released in 1991, so it really doesn't delve into the
acid jazz thing, although artists like Soul II Soul, Kym
Mazelle, Larry Heard, Working Week, Loose Ends, etc. are
featured. There is one page with a nice definition of the
different styles, "jazzfunk", "northern soul", "Motown", etc.

Written by the British point of view (not by a stiff/strict
jazz afficionado), I think this is a very good guide to
digging in the crates for those lost dancefloor gems that
never quite got a following in America.

Sorry, I do not remember the publisher, although I think that
you can find it in a local bookstore just with the info above.
If you have problems finding it, send me e-mail so I can give
you the address.
Jazz On,
Alexees.

ps1 Know of any other such books on soul?
ps2 I found two copies of Alice Clark's Mainstream Records lp
in my station's library and I get to keep one of them. :)
