One major reason why records are skipping is that they are trying
to cut with too much bass. Now that CD's are the norm, newer recording
engineers don't understand how to mix so that the music will transfer
successfully to vinyl. Older UK record buyers may have noticed names like
Porky, Arun and Bilbo scratched on the area between the grooves and the
label. How many of these experienced cutting engineers are still around?

Another thing to watch is that you have set the right tracking weight.
Most DJ cartridges work at 5-7 grams while HiFi cartridges work at 1-2
grams. You'll actually do more damage to your records if you set the
tracking too light than you will if you have it too heavy.
