Wow, that short but sweet report makes me wish I wouldn't have missed it but
thanks to Dan P. of Fog City for notifying me. I went back to S.F., my old
stomping grounds, for a week (Aug. 7-14th) and was surprised hoew much changed
and didn't change.

Visited a few record stores including Groove Merchant, got a few things. A
word to you mainland people: you're are really missing out by not coming to
Hawaii for a short record buying spree. This may be the only place left that
has no regard for record collectors; I was so surprised that records I get here
for $3.00-$4.00 go for $30.00 and up in S.F. Word to the wise, the plane ticket
can be expensive but the pure savings I think are worth it.

The one show (well, concert actually) I did catch was Steely Dan at the
Shoreline on Tuesday the 13th. Two sets, about three hours long--$22.00 but
definitely worth it. Note that jazz-funk greats Ricky Lawson (drums, played
for Roy Ayers Ubiquity. Now with the Yellowjackets) and Cornelius Bumpus
(tenor) were in the band joined by John Beasley (piano, Fender Rhodes, and
organ (!!)) and a few others. Lots of old hits (Peg, Black Cow), new songs for
an album to be released by next year (including a really funky one called "Jack
of Speed"), and surprises (I'm the One, Green Earrings, et al.). Anyone else
go?

I just caught the band's live show in San Jose last night, and
I'd say the kudos are well-deserved. Too bad about the venue,
though. Gordon Biersch is a brewpub/restaurant, and practically
all the tables were reserved for diners, with hardly any room
left for standing and/or dancing. Undaunted by this, Galactic
proceeded to funk the house for three smokin' sets. Good job!
