question -

This has been asked before, so email me privately I guess....

What cartridges should I buy for my new 1200? (yes, I only have one). I'd
be particularly interested in stylii that are good for using in
sampling/production.

stuff -

saw Medeski Martin & Wood during the recent What is Jazz? Festival. They
played as well as usual but the catch here was the venue - they played at
Town hall which is a theater with seats, and the balcony was lit such that
both the crowd and the stage were in bright, bright, light. It was though
a floodlight was shining on the groove and the groove was sucking it in
and reflecting back twice as hard. Intense.

Found a club (I don't know how long they've been doing this) in NYC for
those interested in beat-heavy music - Soundlab. I feel compelled to
spread the word about this one because it most closely approximates the
type of music I like and the type of experience it should be presented in.
The week I went it was in a loft type thing in Williamsburg, with two
floors, one had about four guys with loads of equipment tweaking it while
live musicians jammed and the roof had a couple of great djs, one jungle
guy from London and another hip hop/ dubby guy, as well as a brilliant
view of the Williamsburg bridge. Soundlab phone line: 212-726-1724.
Saturday the party is INSIDE the Brooklyn Bridge.

has anyone been to a concert of dance type music and seen how many people
stand in the crowd with dull stares? At the Chemical Bros.' Irving Plaza
show, which was admittedly not loud enough, I was completely depressed by
the odd experience of seeing a couple of guys massaging machines onstage
while 90% of the crowd just stood there and watched. It was weird for I
guess reasons fairly indescribable but I guess 'lifeless' would be close.
As a result, I threw myself in the midst of the crowd for last Saturday's
Orbital show at the same venue and my experience was saved (the music was
better and more people were into it anyway - it was one of the best shows
I've seen this year). I hope I'm not insulting anyone by getting down on
being down but it was even weirder to see long faces at an electronic
music concert than it is at an indie band concert, where I somewhat
expect it. Isn't a good portion of even the music we discuss here about
dancing? Or at least head-nodding, smiling, feeling it a bit? I was like,
man, if this is the future of music (the technological aspect of the show
and the non-involvement of the crowd) I want out. Maybe they just weren't
loud enough.

finally -

my staying power vote definitely goes for 'throbbing pouch'. and that's
only because I played Portishead TOO much.

Well that's about all
