I might be in the minority on this one, but GC's new album shines far
above their first release for me. This is definitely one of my
favorits releases this summer. Others have mentioned that the first
record sounded more spontaneous and live. I would agree, but also say
there is a more mature and diversified sound on their new release
which appeals to me. They integrate that raw seventies soul sound
with latin jazz, and advance an exciting step beyong their earlier
release. I read an interview with Courtney Pine in Straight N.C., and
he was discussing how a return to seventies jazz fusion rhythms, is
not rehashing of something old--rather it is continuing to explore and
develop music whose exploration is far from complete. Enough on this
edge, I'll just say I was ecstatic to find the new release on lp
finally. At gigs, people can really go off to these tunes.
