I'm looking for information on modern bands who are there playing JAZZ in a
hip hop or funk style? When I say bands I mean musicians playing
instruments and exploring the boundaries of a unique "jazz" vibe.
Alot of the bands I've been checking out are either 70's jazz/funk retro;
sequencer,sampler,drum loop based; or actually from the 60's and 70's (i.e.
re-issues) .
I find groups like Medeski, Martin & Wood and The Charlie Hunter Trio
(Quartet) to be two of the few bands who are experimenting with the
possibility of combining modern rhythms, funky assed grooves with the
harmonic, melodic and IMPROVISATIONAL ground work already layed down by
jazz artists of the past . It's forward momentum; not a step backwards.
If anyone can clue me into more stuff along these lines I'd really
appreciate it.
(I've already heard about Red Snapper and Bop City and am going to check
'em out soon)
Please E-mail me directly as I'm having difficulty subscribing to the "list"
