We just had a similar discussion on the funk list.
This is a big topic, sort of, but the quickest answer I can come up with
is that collectors and dealers have driven up the price of old
funk/jazz/disco records, sometimes to the point of absurdity. I have a
problem with this, because in my experience, most of these collectors
really don't like the music and are in it just for a profit. Also, these
prices keep the average fan from being able to enjoy or learn more about
the music.

I guess I have been lucky in that most of the stores down here don't do
that price gouging...maybe it's because I'm in the south where this music
isn't really appreciated. In any event, although I personally won't pay
more than $15 for a record, vinyl is just like any other commodity and is
worth whatever someone will pay for it. These people would not be charging
such high prices if someone somewhere (probably another collector trying
to get doubles/triples) were not buying.

BTW, if those records you have are in good shape, I'm sure they are worth
money, but if you try to sell them to a shop, they'll cheat you out of its
"true worth," whatever that is.
