Most CD writer software will allow you to store your tracks on hard disk
as sound files (normally .WAV format) which are then written to the cd
in audio format. The Adaptec Easy CD Deluxe 3 and Easy CD PRO 95 both do
this. Spin Doctor allows you to do noise-reduction & click-removal type
functions pretty much on the fly - if your hardware is up to it, you can
virtually write direct to cd as the audio is sampled. Keep in mind you
need about 10 meg per minute to store the audio on hard disk. A full 75
minutes of CD audio is thus 750 Meg. I have an AWE64 and have
experimented with sampling from cassette and then burning a CD. I used
other software in between, to clean up the tracks - ultimately writing
the CD with Easy CD PRO 96. I have Sound Forge4, Wavelab and Cool Edit
96 - all of which have various tools for cleaning up your track,
reducing background noise, removing clicks & pops etc. This all works
quite well and gives a reasonable result - certainly good enough for the
home user but no doubt, not up to studio standards. You need a good
system to do this sort of stuff, processing audio is slow work. I'm
running a 686-P150+, 64meg ram, WindowsNT4 and about 5 Gig in free hard
disk space.

The new Easy CD Creator software from Adaptec has something called Spin Doctor
which is supposed to copy audio to CD's and clean up scratches at the same
time.

Depends on how good your record deck is and how good your soundcard is. A
standard Soundblaster (even the new AWE Gold) or similar isn't going to be
much better than a good cassette deck. A $500 soundcard will give you better
results.

It's no more illegal but probably more worrying to record companies because
it is dead easy nowadays to clone a CD with no loss in quality.

As an artist I wouldn't be too happy about people doing this if the records
were easily available to your friends as well. If prices are too high in the
Netherlands why not order stuff over the net from other countries where prices
are cheaper?

The only time I would approve of this is if a record was deleted and unlikely
to ever be re-issued again. I've had to do this myself when the artists no
longer have the original master tapes and they want their old stuff on CD.

James.
