OLIVE - EXTRA VIRGIN
The windows are open, the curtains are blowing
gently, the sun is going down and millions of
students are trying, in vain, to study for
finals as the coffee goes cold and develops a
milky skin. On the stereo is Olive's Extra
Virgin, the summer album by which academic
careers will be dreamed away and couples will
fall gently in and out of love within a matter
of warm, bleached-out months. And so it shall
be - for Olive are the hauntingly trippy next
stage in the Massive Attack/Everything But the
Girl progression, a high-fashion/low-income
proposition that throbs into the dusk and
offers a real alternative to the disposable
sunshine single (Hanson fans should avoid).=20
It's all along the lines of No 1 single You're
Not Alone (and neither you are in such modern
audio companionship), mid-tempo, middle
ground, with the buttery (or should that be
olive spread-like) vocals of Ruth Ann
smooching meltingly above a big belchy dance
bass. A polyunsaturated love-in that's so
flawless it's hard to dislike - even if it is
all based on similar, simple, synthy riff-dom
that provides the answer to why people will
happily buy eight remixes of the same single.
There are bits of Portishead, bits that hint
at the recent Tori Amos studio meddlings and
bits that build to trip-hop lullabies to which
slothful submission is inevitable. And it also
suggests Paris catwalks, with Miss Moss and
friends toddling along in the latest scanty
nymph style rags with smudged spacey eye
make-up and hair not brushed for a month.
Probably THE album to own if you want to be on
the "IN" list of the season's glossy mags.
