Noise Gate/ Sample Editing

Dear List:
What does a noise gate do. Can it be used(along with Eq) to eliminate
part of a sample like the High or Low. What is a crosssover? I
understand Jamaica-style dj used this to filter stuff also. It may not
be its oiginal purpose but thats how its used.
This brings up the whole subject of sample editing . Granted, the
sampler will give you a (usually) mono reproduction of what you sample
so if it on the record thats whhat you get. However I have heard of
sound editing software that takes out pops, click, and the extremes.
How much of this stuff used imaginatively(beyond its original purpose)
can take out snares Isolate vocals or remove vocals. As a trade i
will give away a secret. I own a Thompson vocal eliminator/karoake
machine. It is DESIGNED so that you can knock out the signal that
is mixed to the center of both left and right channels i.e the lead. It
is imperfect on modern dance records due to the way modern vocals are
doubled reverbed and phased off center. It does have uses. I use it as a
bassline filter because on modern records the bassline isnt always put
to 55 degrees on each side so some of the B-line as well as the
rest of the mix gets sliced off and filter. This gives you a dark ERick
Sermon like sound. Also on many records the snare is mixed dead center
and gots lopped off with the vocal. Now i have been offered a chance to
get the newer model with a better chip and key-change. it may work
but first i would like to have a succesful release with this one before
i pay to upgrade(with trade-in). This device works better on Early
stereo records(Led Zep is perfect beatles are okay Jb is spotty) than
today's as with all the reverbing and (eventide)harmonizing you dont get
the olde fashioned lead- in- the- center -band- along the- side (on both
sides)mix composition approach.
verdict; I bet there is software for a computer that will get
results as good or better but this is a handy tool and does have neat
but variable results. I bought on layaway 2 years ago when a computer
would have been more expensive and would have needed more upfron
expenditure.
