turntable info help?

I'm finally going to spend some money and buy a turntable, but was
wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I'm willing to scrounge
through the wanted ads here in Los Angeles or buy new if that's a better
idea. I dont want to spend more than a few hundred dollars and friends
have told me that they saw 1200s in the want ads for $300 in good
condition...but maybe I dont really need a 1200...

If I wanted to buy new, I hear Technics has some more reasonable stuff.
Can anyone reccomend a direct-drive Technics besides the 1200?

I'm assuming that I have to buy "direct-drive."

How about diamonds/needles/cartridges? Any reccomendations for someone who
isnt going to be scratching so much as listening to stuff that doesnt come
out on CD.

I know we've hashed over this before, but I'd really appreciate any
thoughts before I go out and spend my hard-earned money.
