Hard Jazz/Acid Jazz

I've been buying records for a couple of weeks now and I'm sort of
confused. You see, what first prompted me to start spinning Acid Jazz
was hearing it at a number of local raves here in SF. So I hunted down
the mix tapes of some DJs that I heard at a party. But what I've been
hearing on CD compolations and a lot of records sounds different than
what I've been hearing at parties. There is some overlap, but mostly the
stuff I've been hearing outside parties sounds like it should be called
"Hard Jazz": Lots of traditional Jazz Instraments like horns with a
heavier beat and more strucure than straight Jazz. But what I've been
hearing at parties has more hip-hop elements to it. I'm not talking
about lyrics here, I mean there's more variety in general among the
instruments used.

So my question is: Are there established "sub-types" of Acid Jazz that
are generally recongnised? Is this what I'm hearing? Is this making
scence to anyone? Or do I need to put down the crack pipe?
