i recently picked up the "strata east" on soul jazz. i really bought it for
a heath bros. track (which was sampled for herbalizer's "scratchy noise"
--sorry i don't feel like running downstairs to see what it's called)
thanks to qool marv for his mixtape which hipped me to this track! the cool
thing other than the bass/drum groove is that the mbira (african thumb
piano)
is played not like an "ethnic/african" instrument, but in a jazz way--it
could
have been just as easily a regular acoustic piano. there's a couple classic
gil scott-heron tracks on there too--"peace go w/you brother" & "the bottle"

--that are quite nice.
