Hello,

There was a latin american festival here in Rotterdam this week. I went to
2 concerts. One of Hermeto Pascoal e grupo, a brazilian jazz band. It must
have been the most wicked jazz concert I've seen so far. The percussionist
had collected a large collection of what looked like swiss cowbells(I bet
he has been searching the Alps for years). He used a lot of unconventional
stuff like tools and kitchen gear. His only normal instrument was a
pandeiro.
The leader, Hermeto, who looks like a myhtical character with his long
white hair and beard. played keyboard, a glass of water, which he used as a
sax and a kettle to produce his mad rhytms and melodies. The sax player
also played clarinet, flute and oboe. A great show. I know that Hermeto
was a part of the old quarteto novo, together with Airto Moreira and Flora
Purim. Does anybody know if there are any albums by this group?

The other concert was by a group of old cubans playing son (the name was la
vieja trova santiaguera if I am correct). Their average age was 83! There
were almost carried onto the stage where they gave a nice show. They even
did a little hipshaking
and flirting with the ladies who where standing next to the stage. I would
sign for being able to do that at such an age. Music keeps you alive.

That's it for now. Oh and Mr Bob Davis I enjoyed your little story a lot.

Now playing Zap Mama, french acid-jazz! Hooking up with Michael Franti on
their album Seven.

um abraço,

Jeroen
