I thought that Grover Washington recorded for CTI first. I was under the
impression that it was the classic album "Live at the Bijou" which got
him signed up to Motown. A passing Motown executive was so supposed to
be really impressed that he got Grover signed up. This story certainly
seems to have some truth in it as the "Live at the Bijou" album
certainly came out on the Kudu label first.

jj> The CTI (and their sister label KUDU) roster reads like a who's who
of
jj> soul jazz (and even 'regular' jazz for that matter). They put out
the
jj> classic tunes that people still sample. And to top it off, Bob
James
jj> was one of the in-house producer/arrangers (and we only need
"Nautilus"
jj> to know about his validity) Here's a partial list from the top of
my
jj> head: Grover Washington Jr., Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Johnny
jj> Hammond, Stanley Turrentine, Idris Muhammad (two words: "Loran's
jj> Dance"), Eric Gale, Joe Beck, Joe Farrell, Jim Hall, Paul Desmond,
Art
jj> Farmer, Randy Weston, Ron Carter, Esther Phillips, Don Sebesky and
jj> that's only to name a few!!!

cti was kinda "inter-label", i.e. different artists that recorded for
cti,
were actually signed to different labels (e.g. grover washington jr.
was
actually a motown artist, whereas wes montgomery was an a&m
artist--both did
records for cti). btw, hubert laws & george benson are 2 more names
you can
add to the list...

a few cti classics i own:

bob james "2" (there's four of them, by number--get them all! nautilus
is
on
"1")
grover washington jr. "it feels so good", "mr. magic"
wes montgomery "down here on the ground"

-t

p.s. did idris record "loran's dance", too? it's on an old grover
album i
have on kudu.
