Speaking of coffee table books, another one I *highly* recommend
is A CENTURY OF JAZZ by Roy Carr. This one does have informative
text, as well as a great oversize layout and tons of great
pictures, album covers, concert posters, etc.

...and that ROUGH GUIDE TO REGGAE really *is* the best book on
reggae currently available. BUT...if you want to learn about
reggae *and* hear the music, check out Steve Barrow's TOUGHER
THAN TOUGH, the 4-CD box set on Island. Steve points out in
the ROUGH GUIDE that the book and CDs are really complementary.
And the box set has excellent liner notes all by itself. An
essential purchase, IMHO.
