Since I've been on the list, I've thoroughly enjoyed the suggestions and
viewpoints. So, when I come across something, even remotely related to
the list, I feel obligated to share.

Normally I don't mess with "Best of...." compilations, because they
usually suck, but Polygram has one called "Great Ladies of Jazz" (1995)
that I picked up for $3.99 (other compilations like this go for MUCH
more and aren't half as nice). And I have to say that it ain't bad. Track
listing is as follows and anything with an "L" by it means its a live
recording:

Ella Fitzgerald "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" L

Ella "Love Is Here to Stay"

Dinah Washington "Ain't Misbehavin'"

Billie Holiday "Come Rain or Come Shine"

Lena Horne "Deed I Do"

Nina Simone "I Loves You Porgy" L

Billie "God Bless the Child" (I've heard 2 versions of this song--jazzy
and one with backing vocals in a more 'classical' sound)

Shirley Horn " I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good"

Sarah Vaughan "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off"

Abbey Lincoln "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"
