Hey t,
I agree with Flight, if you want quality music from folks who aren't
going to do covers, you won't find too much downtown in the loop. There
is Andy's on Hubbard for jazz and of course Jazz Showcase for the
mainstream biggies (I love this place because people listen to the music
and don't talk and it's smoke-free; it's worth the often $20-$30
admission) There's also Rituals which has jazz and poetry readings. From
what I understand, the hotels occassionally put out a few good shows
here and there.

I'm not sure what you mean by dicey clubs are

Your best bet is to check the free weekly Reader for daily
events. It comes out on Thursday nights and goes FAST, so catch it
quick! Or come to think of it, they've got a fairly complete and updated
web site. It's at: www. chireader.com They have the most complete
listings, although it tends to be a little North side biased. You can
find it at many clubs, Tower Records and Borders, etc.

Unlike Flight, I really wouldn't recommend Cubby Bear. Unless
you know who's playing and really, really like them, the visibility
sucks and the crowds are usually on the billigerant drunk side.

If you're driving and on the north side, be prepared to look and
look and for parking.

Good luck,
dawn
