Good grief - I have to say something about this. It just seems to me
that What's Going On exemplifies a lot of things that are right about
the kind of music and the kind of people who make the music we discuss
here. I can't think of too much better examples of music with soul and
consciousness than Inner City Blues; Holy Holy; What's Going On. I still
find it quite extraordinary - on a pretty basic level admittedly - that
such an overtly political album was put together by a man on a label
that a few years earlier was producing bubble gum music. I dunno - it
just seems to me that in a time when people who listen to this kind of
music get a bit too hung up about mixing records together, DJ remixes
and all that malarkey (ouch - know I'm gonna get flamed for this) that
What's Going On is a high water mark for music that is Talking Loud and
Saying Something.
