been wondering when someone on this list would bring up these guys! the
philosopher kings are a canadian band that doesn't get enough airplay in
this country- hands down. i have their most recent album "famous, rich,
and beautiful", which contains some amazing stuff and some merely good
stuff. all the songwriting and grooves are creative and intelligent,
but the hook for me was the first cut i heard from them called "i am the
man". it has the makings of sort of an acid jazz anthem. the first
time i "heard" it was watching a nationally televised canadian video
show (don't remember the name) in victoria, b.c.- i nearly blew a
gasket and had to get the cd asap!
they've also got some retro 70's type grooves, one called "oleo" with
subject matter similar to "butter" by the tribe called quest (from "low
end theory", i think). all in all, in my opinion, they've got a style
all their own which is off the hook. i give it two thumbs up. cheers.
