I saw Shadow spin about a year ago when he was touring with De La Soul,
Jeru the Damaja (remember the Jeru thread???yikes.), and Latyrx.
I must say I was not very impressed. Granted I was in a pretty big club
where I couldn't get a close look at what he was doing (not to mention I
knew far less about DJing then as well), but it certainly looked and
sounded like he was just playing his various singles. (offhand I recall
him playing the first track from teh Headz 1 comp--the one w/ the U2
sample--, as well as the number song, and organ donor.) Organ Donor was
the only thing I saw him do that seemed "live": he sampled the organ line
live. Everything else was simple beat matching. All scratches were
already on the tracks.
One thing, I remember him stopping in the middle of mixing to shake the
hand of a guy who somehow got up on the stage to watch him. It was
funny. The guy on stage was certainly dumbfounded at what Shadow was
doing. So maybe I'm mistaken...anyone recall seeing him do something
genuinely impressive live?
