Although the jazz/funky house connection has always been there, arguably
jazz is a fundamental aspect of the house sound, I have to say that the
last year has seen new waves of creativity in this genre. Mixing in
mostly acoustic drums, guitar etc derived from ethnic music is I think a
feature of an already developing jazz-house sound. Among some names
that can be mentioned (ones that I like to be honest)...Kevin Yost, Mark
Farina, Idjut Boys, Dubtribe, Blaze, Mateo and Matos and of course,
everything on the Jazz in the House series on Slip 'n Slide. Volume 6 in
the series just came out. Other labels of note, Guidance out of Chicago
and Imperial Dub out of SF.
I'm listening to Spiritual Life's Spiritual Life Music comp from 1997
right now. The word here is SMOOTH or more correctly S M O O F! Check
out the fourth track, Blaze's Direction. Very chill, almost beats a
Jamaican vacation for relaxation.
