Banana Slugs of NYC

I received this the other day during my trek through
the NYC underground beats of Latin percussion, African thumps
and the house of Serge Gainsbourg;
turns my day into night ... Oops ! Wrong movie here !

* ahem *

Picture a slug against a yellow paper flyer:

' If this reminds you of your subway ride,
maybe it's time you demanded improvements to mass transit. '

' Unfortunately, while subway and bus use is way up,
 service definitely isn't.

Seems like your commute is getting worse ? It is.

Transit ridership is way up, but service isn't - and that means
more crowded trains and buses. And slower trips.

Over the past year, 560,000 more riders have crowded
onto city subways and buses every weekday.
By 1999, there will be 1.1 million more daily riders.

The MTA just announced it would add service,
but it's nowhere near enough. By next year, weekday
subway ridership will have grown 17 percent since 1997.
But officials plan to add only 4 percent more service.
Bus ridership will grow 36 percent, but only 9 percent
more service is planned.

The result is elbow-in-the-ribs crowding and slower commutes.
Transit workers and supervisors are being pushed to their limits
trying to keep things moving safely and conveniently.

Don't stand for it ! Demand more service and increased
funding for transit.

END THE CRAWL. END THE CRUSH.

Stop Rudy Giuliani From Selling Off Our
Community to the Highest Bidder
SAVE CHARAS / EL BOHIO !

Call Giuliani's Deputy Mayor, Joseph Lhota,
212 788 3137, give him this msg:

Tell Mayor Giuliani to call off the sale of
Charas/El Bohio. * Tell him that Charas
belongs to the community and should be sold
to those who invested sweat, time and money
to create it. (I) Demand to know who bought
the building and what they intend to use it for.

* (Block #392, Lot #10)

For more information on meetings, actions
and demonstrations: contact Charas/El Bohio
605 East 9th St. between Ave B and C,

I'm shivering now at work.
It's about 8:05 am, I got in at an unearthly hour 6:45 am.

Ugh.

I'll be stopping by the Gathering for the Community Gardens
first tonite, after a looong disco nap & Scooby snack,
and then ( methinks perhaps ) Twilo for Respect is Burning.

I would very much like to check out Todd A.'s post
about the open mic Fridays at Pink Pony cafe.
Has anyone else ever been there ?

Already I have tickets for the Other Music web launch,
and I've been harping about nothing else in the past 2 weeks.

Brrr ... it's freakin' cold in here.

Chattery teeth,
Yvonne.

RECOMMENDATION III
by Jack Collom

Study: Biology/Evolutionary Theory/Your house, in scales.
Drink Environmentalism, but when stirred make poem hip
to its own playful energies first, then you can say, "Pretty
please with sugar on it" or "Save a leaf" or "Plant a tree on
your neighbor's head."
Study: local geology, weather, water history or what
parts of these large matters you can manage.
(Anselm Hollo says, "Poets should know everything.")
Play.
Stare at things.
It's a matter of familiarity. You can truly find as
many echoes (thus fun complications) in the "natural"
"world" as you can socially or sociologically - your own
reality is as closely related to a family of foxes as to
riffs of culture.
And in those foxes you can find, in fox liver cells or
fox quarks or fox behavior, the most up-to-date
workings time can belch or foreshadow at you.
May I call you citizen?
