Elson and list,

I'm down in the basement floor of an older building. During the quake,
the building definitely shook but it didn't break. I woke up and was so
horrified that I went back to sleep!

they said. This low, almost insidious growl that went right into your
bones.

The next day and this whole last week has been crazy as this part of the
country is in this weird depressed state. The people that have gone to
the central quake area in Izmit come back with these blank expressions
on their face. They say its like a nuclear bomb hit, a war zone. Some
cities have been completely leveled. Eveyone knows someone that was
effected. I was in cafe today and over heard some guy saying his
brother's family were all killed.

Here in central Istanbul, there was isolated damage. There are some
people sleeping in parks and in the open spaces around highways. It
rained today so now there is mud all over the place.

Basically the whole situation has been totally wack. I can't believe I
live in society that is so greedy and corrupt as to allow this kind of
thing to happen. Allowing these kind of buildings to be built was
insane. I mean, who builds the god damn largest oil refinery in the
country right on top of a major fault!?!

I'm really disappointed and pessimistic. The government are a bunch of
self-serving assholes who have been totally inept during the worst of
this. Politics, politics, politics.

Elson, thank you and the list for the interest. Any help would of
course be appreciated.

Peace, out.
