Hello:

This is a little long, so feel free to delete this
message if you choose to do so. But I thought I'd
interject a bit of useful info for your mind and ears.

I've fallen for downtempo during some late-night
listening on some of the great shows on KCRW in Los
Angeles. I have not listened to it in quite some time,
as I am too far to get its signal and don't currently
have a computer (they are broadcasting over the Net
now). There have been several shows playing such genre
that came and went, mostly because the hosts have
moved onto other areas rather than for lack of
popularity.

One show that I see is still on the schedule that you
may wish to catch is "Blueprint" with Kevin Lincoln.
It broadcasts Tuesday nights/Wednesday mornings
(midnight-3am Pacific) on KCRW. You can listen to the
show via the Real Player at www.kcrw.org.

About college radio--I work for a college radio
station and have had a show for a couple of years that
played acid jazz, downtempo, and Latin sounds. People
who listened to it were quite pleased, and I was happy
to turn them onto sounds that they would otherwise not
have the pleasure to listen to.

I would say more about the show and how you can listen
to it, but some powers-that-be haven't exactly made
the effort (in my opinion) to keep a consistent Real
Server connection. And this Saturday will be my last
show after two years. I hope to continue in some way
when I move on.

Here are some recommendations for some classic
downtempo/ambient:

* Any of the Ambient Dub volumes on Beyond in the U.K.
(the label doesn't seem to exists any longer, but
worth getting if you can find them)
* Clubbed Out--a great 2 CD compilation of chilled out
sounds on Solid State in the U.K. with classic chilled
sounds
* Most any title on Pork...can't beat them
* Anything on Ninja Tune (not always downtempo, but
lots of jazz-influenced sounds that will keep you
smiling)
* The recent Freezone volumes (5 & 6)--Morpheus has
put together excellent tracks in one package. Those
were the ones I'm more familiar with (I own them).
They're on SSR
* The Future Sounds of Jazz--I owned the last three
volumes (including the most recent one) and they are
all laced with great downtempo. To be honest about the
last one, it's lacking in downtempo and has more
Latin-flavored sounds...yet still worth checking out.
From Compost.

As for Fila (this is an appendium to the Pork
subject), they have a new label called Tritone. You
can find more info about the label at
www.tritone.co.uk.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Velanche
