Keyser & Shuriken - Newsletter #3

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of Jah, the almighty and the evil Gorilla.)

Newsflash 20.12.1999

Dear friends,

the bad brothers from Budapest are here again to confess you their sins and other forbidden pleasures. First of all, despite of all the promos we were getting last week (thank you!!!) we were spending increbible sums of local currency on vinyl (hmmmm...) instead of buying christmas presents to our friends and beloved. Then we spent half a day getting high with the Gorilla (more info on this mysterious and evil creature will be given in our future newsletters) in Shuriken's home studio remixing a track entitled Mar Delutan by Kispal es a Borz, a Hungarian alternative rock band. The song is about a stoned afternoon spent behind drawn curtains watching TV - just to mention one activity -with the loved girlfriend. We tried to give the original track the deLuxe treatment it deserves. Later the same night (at about 3 AM) the still working Shuriken had to deal with an upset old lady living just above his apartment who had enough of the booming bass and wanted to get some sleep. (Ooops!!!) Because of the overhours of studio work, Shuriken was unable the get his ass in time to the studio, so Keyser had to put up for him in the first two hours of the session.

In the mix we played further tracks from the forthcoming Yonderboi album (Shallow and Profound) that will come out on the Mole label (famous for the Listening Perls series) of UCMG. We just got the good news that they will release the whole album (not just a maxi-single) on vinyl as well. We even invited Yonder for an interview to this weeks' Telibeviszonzott Vagyakozas, but he had to deal with the finishing of the graphic design for the album cover. Anyway, if any of you are in Berlin during New Years Eve, you can check him out playing with his new live band Trevira Modern (we still don't know which club, but we will be more than glad to find out for you, if someone really wanted to see them.)

One more thing: in the studio during a break we listened to Archie Shepp's version of The Girl from Ipanema and realised that we actually got one of our most amazing musical thrill out of a free jazz recording. Prior to this we both had difficulties with understanding this kind of jazz that more freely deconstructs the melodical structures. We think that the latest musically daring and innovative U.F.O. album (Bon Voyage) played a great roll in opening our minds to be more patient when listening to this kind of beautiful and emotionally shaking jazz. For that we are truly grateful for the U.F.O. The new LP from Beanfield (Human Patterns), which we got directly from Compost Records is also another great example of real nu jazz.

(Listen to Shepp's interpretation of the man's longing as the 'tall and tan' Brazilian beauty passes him by in our radio program or on Shepp's Fire Music album on Impulse - they've just released it on vinyl in their reissue series.)

That's it for this time, but we'll be back with more info on the Gorilla next week. Until that, we wish y'all a very merry Christmas!

Keep on groovin' till next week!
