RE: A Matter of Production

Hi All,

Since I'm the one who started this CD vs Vinyl thread, I'll try to
quiet things down a bit by just stating where I stand on things.
I understand the fascination with the tactile aspects of vinyl,
and the nostalgia that goes with it, and that's fine. I understand that
most DJs can't work without vinyl, too. A friend of mine is a techno
DJ, and he swears by vinyl. He said that some of his DJ friends get
better work if they use vinyl, but run into problems if they use CD or
other digital formats. I can see where it's hard to mix without vinyl,
but I've also heard DJs that can't make a decent transition with vinyl,
and it makes their argument really weak. They really have no excuse for
being sloppy. You might as well do cross-fades like on the radio. Since
I majored in radio in college, that still has its appeal. Like I said,
I'm not interested in scratching, so that doesn't play a role in my
opinion. I've always been about the music and just the music, and
anything that interferes with that(vinyl noise, tape noise, distortion)
isn't what I want to hear. When CDs came out, I figured that they were
as close to having a copy of the masters as you were gonna get on a
commercial basis, and that still holds true. CDs can sound warm or
cold, depending on the equipment. My Discman is a basic model, but it
has an almost 3-D quality to the sound. The separation and spacing on
the instruments is something to hear. I think you need a really good
turntable and sound system to get a decent sound out of records. My
experience with vinyl and cassettes has always been one of compromise
and frustration. In the past, if a record would skip(no less than half
the time), I wanted to break it. I've had more than enough phase
problems with cassettes(auto-reverse is a big culprit here), so when I
was able to get a minidisc walkman, my prayers were answered. I left my
cassette walkman by the wayside long ago.
Like I said, these are all my opinions and experiences, and if
anyone out there has better luck with vinyl and cassette, more power to
you. It just doesn't work for me. I hope this doesn't drag the thread
out anymore.

Take Care-----Paul Berger(aka DJ Mars)---
