>Victor Davies - Brother [label: Flipside] : anglo-brazilian vocals over a
mello housey samba beat

Aargh! I've been looking all over London for this record last week!

some of the things I did find:

Blaktonez 12" - Flying High/Pleasure Ride feat. Melissa Brown
(Mainsqueeze..sublabel of people records), a-side, housey tune with weird
rhyhtm produced by I.G. Culture, warm background vocals..b-side funky tune,
nice female vocals. Anyone heard the other 12"on Mainsqueeze?

Miyazawa - The Afrosick EP (Disorient) another excellent Mr. Bongo bossa
nova-esque release with remixes of Rainer Truby Trio (I'm seeing the name
everywhere at the moment) and As One. the first one is the winner for me.

Nitin Sawhney - Homelands (album version, Outcaste,
postmaster@mvillage.co.uk) if the rest on the album is like this (it's not
out yet, is it?) I'll definitely buy it. Heavy on the percussion / violins
and Indian chants.

I bought that one at Soul Jazz Records. I saw a message from last week
asking about the label. Well they also have their own shop in Soho and a
team of nice dj's that are now spinning every saturday on the 100% and 200%
DYNAMITE evenings. Last saturday was Jerry Dammers birthday party which was
a real treat. A very sweaty combination of Ska, Soul, Funk, Reggae and Dub
as the stuff you can find on the two dynamite albums. I couldn't stop
dancing! The label is a longtime favourite of mine.as it comes to
compilations. .. packaging and picking is always excellent and
remarkable...remember the Strata East and Black Jazz comps, Berimbau e
Percussão, London Jazz Classics series, Batucada por favor, Batucada the
sound of the favelas, Chicano Power, Chris Bowden lp...Message from the
Tribe etc etc..

on with the vinyls (anyone has experimented with dvd-ram already? :)) - Ian
Simmonds lp - Last states of Nature (K7) experimental jazzy d&b and
downtempo stuff. this will require some more time to listen to as it is deep
stuff. check it out..

East Village Headz 12"- Rude Vibez (Influence), village headz from London??
anyway they're a jazzy lot, I didn't like it as much at home as I did in the
shop though...the b-side rocks heavy, dance-floor banger with a big
bassline.

Kevin Yost - One Starry Night cd (not on vinyl?) - one starry night , a very
nice and mellow deep jazzy house album like you can expect from him I
think..I love it.

Biofeld 12" - Nexus (nuphonic, info@nuphonic.demon.co.uk) this one can be
found on various comps as well (Root Down I believe) , jazz in the present
tense..nice percussion, horns, piano, bossa feel..

I visited fellow listee DJ Tahira from São Paulo last week who has become a
Londoner now. He has brought a stack of real brazilian goodies with him (he
already sold a couple to Chris of Amalgation of sounds @ release the groove)
so if you're into that sort of stuff contact him quickly at 0171-3867528. He
has the Jorge Ben Jor records with the black eyed peas samples (whose asses
are being sued at the moment by Mr.Jor) some Marcus Valle ,Banda Black Rio
(40 pounds at Mr. Bongo!), Joyce and obscure and rare capoeira, candomble,
samba records.. he hooked me up with a rare brazilian hiphop cd of Marcello
D2 who makes abundant use of bossa and jazz samples..muito bem.. btw he's
also looking for a job (tourist visa jobs only) and happy to meet with other
listees when in London....(that's it for my promotional work today!)

We went to Bar Rumba last monday to hear Gilles play a weird set of tunes.
His mixing was terrible put his picks were great. He played one song 2
times, uptempo, happy latin flavour with a house beat, chorus: let the
sunshine in, let the sunshine in...... that's still buzzing in my head now.
Anyone knows what it is?

I left for Holland the day that the Basement Jaxx lp came out and the hype
came to an explosion..so anyone heard the album of the year? :)

dutch listees: a free concert of Ozomatli will be held in..eh I think either
Paradiso or Melkweg in Amsterdam on mondaynight (check it as I'm obviously
not sure). also this friday: Nightmares on Wax @ nighttown Rotterdam ( I
heard he's performing with an entire band) and saturdays Kofy Brown in
Rotown, Rotterdam

oh and sad news form the kozmigroov list:

"It is with profound sadness that I report that Leon Thomas, vocal jazz
innovator, griot, percussionist, and my friend, passed on this morning in
New
York City. He performed last night in Brooklyn...a show I regret to say I
didn't see. In the morning he became sick at home in the Bronx and was
escorted to the hospital by his current companion, Betty. After doctors
tried
to revive him he passed away. He had been suffering from leukemia.

Memorial or funeral service plans have not yet been made...I will alert the
list when I find them out. Please offer your prayers and condolences to his
companion Betty, to his dear friend Vienna Carol, to his son Amos, and to
the
musical community who loved him.

May God bless Leon.
Mojuba Leon Thomas, ibae ibae torun, embelese olodumare embelese olorun. -
Ian Scott Horst, Brooklyn, New York City"........................
