    Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #42: Without ruler-markers

    Newsflash 15.12.2000

    Dear friends,

Here is another newsletter to make your head spin. After returning from the
International Record Fair with all the buried vinyl treasure we spent our
Christmas-present budget on (sorry girlfriends, friends and family :P ) we
got busy in the radio with DJ Lee'n'gum. Not surprisingly the first half of
the mix contains almost only serious crate goodies (this part will be
archived on the Tilos site for a longer period, so that you can learn more
secrets of our trade). There are no big news this week, but so what, we are
buggin' out already on the airwaves (the temporary frequency lasts for two
more weeks...). Unfortunately the leased phone lines between the studio and
the transmitter was dropping out frequently during our session, so it's a
    web exclusive. Enjoy!

Get ready for some exciting Hungarian productions (most of them so fresh
they have just been picked out from the CD-R burner) coming in the mix next
    week!

We have forgotten to celebrate the 1st anniversary of hardcore newsletter
biz last week! The first one went out on the 7th of December last year (you
can read them all at http://tilos.hu/musorok/telibe_vagy/newsletter.html).
We wonder how long we can keep writing all this nonsense on!

One more word about the incredible Astro Jazz Lounge guys. As you may
already know; we have quitted doing these splendid club night (we had to
find time to work on our tunes), but dj Suhaid and the Szamosi Brothers keep
on pushing the right vibes in the city. Astro Jazz Lounge is now one of the
most popular spots on Thursday nights in Budapest. This week they have
started inviting live jazz bands to their nights. Their first guest Aladar
Pege (with his quartet) is still the best bassist in the Hungarian jazz
scene after more than forty years. His current group played an extremely
tight (sometimes funky as hell, sometimes more at a modern jazz angle) set
    that night!

This week's reading could have been our dj manifesto:

"I never intend to sit down and play music that's bad or commercial; but on
the other hand, I do not intend to stop playing tunes I like - wherever they
come from - just to fit in whatever is 'avant-garde' and 'in' at the moment.
These are all songs to which I'm attracted, and so long as the results are
aesthetically satisfying to me, I don't care whether some rule-maker thinks
they're not 'proper' to jazz. After all, music is - or should be -
    self-expression."

Interview with Gabor Szabo; from his 'Spellbinder' album's liner notes

Check out the Hungarian Guitar genius in action in the mix!
