ALBUM OF THE WEEK: SOUNDTRACK FOR LIFE by A:xus. The first single-artist
album release from Chicago's Guidance label, after 60-plus 12"s and a
half-dozen compilations, is the debut album from Austin Bascom, aka Abacus,
now recording as A:xus. It features the familiar vocal tracks "Baghdad
Cafe" and "When I Fall," as well as an eclectic selection of new, and mostly
instrumental, material. Rooted in the classic techno sound of Derrick May,
but incorporating elements of house, drum'n'bass, hip hop, and more, A:xus'
lush and beautiful debut is indeed a fitting "soundtrack for life."
