Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #24: Do you have a headache or something?

    Newsflash 15.06.2000

    Dear friends,

First we would like to apologise that we may reply to the emails later or
the newsletters are shorter than you could expect from us. We still have to
survive some very hard days of studying for the exams, so we would like to
    ask you for understanding.

In our last newsletter we made a fatal mistake. Of course the 10" "Male
Female" by Slow Supreme was released by the Jazid Collective from Oslo.
This is their first release, and what a start! Check out their future
    releases (http://www.jazid.no).

This week's reading goes out in remembrance of the King of... ehh, what?

"Well, the word salsa actually means sauce, a condiment, a food. Condiments
and sauces you eat, you don't listen to that, you don't see that, and you
don't dance to it. It's a commercial word, so they call it salsa. For
example, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where a cowboy, or a non-Latino, will come
up to me and ask me: "Tito, could you play me a salsa?" I'll say: "What do
you want an Alka-Seltzer, do you have a headache or something?" So the word
salsa is a commercial word. Maybe they'll change it in the next two or
three years. Meanwhile, recording companies find it easier to sell their
merchandise by using that word. The word salsa combines all kinds of music
into one, like the mambo, the cha-cha, the merengue, all music with
Caribbean origins. When they call it salsa, you don't actually define what
rhythm is. That's why I don't particularly care for the word. However,
sometimes they call me the "King of Salsa," so I'll go along with it, I
won't dispute it, as long as they don't call me the "Queen of Salsa!" I'll
go along with the name salsa until it dies out and they come up with some
new name. But I've been playing the same music for the last 30 or 40
    years."

    Rest In Peace!

    Cheers,
