Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #19: The Balkan is revolting

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of "der alte Zombu" and the evil Gorilla.)

    Newsflash 05.05.2000

    Dear friends,

Two weeks passed by since we wrote you silly things last time. Since then a lot of things happened to us. First of all, we had the chance to listen to Herbie Mann live here in Budapest at Fono (http://www.fono.hu/english/fono.html). This wonderful flutist - one of our favorite musicians - just turned 70, but still full of energy and is able to be more versatile and open-minded more than lot of musicians with half of his age.

A few days later we had another delightful musical experience: this time we invited DJ Palotai to the Astro Jazz Lounge, our Sunday evening club event (the long-time K&S newsletter readers may know him quite well). He showed us again, that he is on the top not only in playing drum and bass or breakbeat, but you have to listen to him with both ears when he plays nu jazz (there's nothing new for us: we have known this fact for a long time, still, there are a lot of people here who know only the heavier side of him).

The best is yet to come... We have some friends down in Croatia, who have been our best audience ever at Astro Jazz Lounge. Last week they invited us to stay a few days in Zagreb. They didn't have to say it twice: there was a two-days future jazz festival with such names as Gilles Peterson, Jürgen von Knoblauch (Jazzanova), dZihan & Kamien, Raw Deal, Emanuela de Luca, Beanfield, Syrup, Cubismo and others. This fantastic party was organised by two Croatian guys, Eddy & Dus. You may already know them, they have released house stuff for years. Their interest turned to new jazz since then, and soon you can expect some gems on the new Madrugada label. (You can find more info about them at http://www.aquarius.hr/kontrapunkt.html.)

This week's short reading is a recipe that we got from two GROOVY coctail and lounge addicts:

    Zombie cocktail
    1 1/2 ounces dark rum (86 proof)
3/4 ounce Jamaica rum (90 proof)
3/4 ounce light rum (86 proof)
    3/4 ounce pineapple juice
    3/4 ounce papaya juice
    1 ounce lime juice
    1 teaspoon powdered sugar...

shake the ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled pint glass; Garnish with a pineapple wheel and a cherry; Float Damerara rum (151 proof) and sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
from the back cover of the "Mondo Exotica" compilation

Big up to Maja and Sanjin (the Bossa Boy) and thanks for Bruno for the excellent accomodation!

Keep on shakin your booties till next week!
