    Good and hard question.

    For the present purposes, I was thinking of rock'n'roll as something
    like: vocal music which uses guitars, electric bass and drumsets as the
    basic instrumentation, simple, country- or blues-derived melodies and
    chord progressions, and in which the singer is typically trying to
    express sincere and simple feelings, such as joy, pain, depression,
    angst, love, enjoyment of drinking, partying and taking drugs, sexual
    pleasure, wish of never being born, utter indifference to anything etc.

    But I'm sure that there are plenty of counterexamples...
