This thread kicks! Lots of us participating in this "Crime Pays" thread are
laying heavy emphasis on film music as a great way to carry through Markus'
    "criminal" party theme.
(No, the theme's not *illegal* it's just *criminal.*)
Allright -- now for another angle (or two):
    1. Naked City "Naked City;" John Zorn, "Spillane," (reissued as part of
"Godard/Spillane"); John Zorn "Filmworks Vol. ___."
Zorn's groundbreaking composition and arrangement shows major gangter-movie
influence. The "Naked City" record, for example, featured a piece entitled
"You will be Shot," and an excellent cover of "The Sicilian Clan." The
Naked City record, however, may be out of print. "Spillane" features the
gruff-voiced John Lurie speaking the part of Spillane's Mike Hammer
character in a 25-minute epic that effectively conjures detective film
atmosperes. Its length renders "Spillane" suitable for only a *very*
conceptual party. The Filmworks discs offer some cool shorter pieces.
    2. "Blaxploitation" soundtracks: Curtis Mayfield, "Superfly;" Issac Hayes,
"Truck Turner"/"Shaft;" Marvin Gaye, "Trouble Man;" Melvin Van Peebles,
"Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song" (or was that Baaadaaass Song?); etc.
These soundtracks represented major creative opportunities for the artists
who composed and arranged them. I consider these soundtracks significant
influences on many of the genres we a recommending for Markus' party,
including trip-hop and chill out genres.
    - Stefan
P.S. Markus, do you really find Mafia ladies sexy? I never have; maybe I've
been missing out on something here. :-)

The classic Herbalizer track "the real killer" ends with a pretty funny
movie sample. Some mobster guy is begging for his life and breaks into a
touching song. "Tommy, you remember the one we used to sing back at the
club.... hooow loooong do i have to waaaaaiiiiit" Midway there is a gunshot
and screams which bring it all to a quick end when the guy shoots him. Good
track to get the crowds attention with. :)
Another oldie but goodie ... Wiseguy's "Executive Suite" LP on Wall of
    Sound.

We're planning a huge new years party for friends, and we're thinking about
a mafia-related theme (what with the sexy ladies and pinstripe men...).
However, getting a selection of music that adds to the atomsphere without
being really irritating is turning out to be a challenge. Perhaps you could
    help me?

What I'm looking for, obviously, is lounge music with a twist (For example,
the new United Future Organization album is good), as well as some
danceable stuff (such as Propellerheads with Shirley Bassey), and some
James Bond stuff as well. I'd really appreciate your input!!!
