Pick of the Week: Oh my gosh! And I thought the first one was good. Iím
talking about the Guidance Recordings compilation Hi-Fidelity Dub
Sessions: The Second Chapter. I simply cannot get enough of these
contemporary bass-drenched sounds, created by producers ranging from
Viennaís Tosca and Kieser Velten to DJ Spooky, I:Cube, Indian Ropeman,
dZihan & Kamien, and more. This is solid, solid, solid with not a single
weak track. Gotta go hit re-rewind.
Guest: Almighty funkologist and sultan of soul, Dr. Bob Jones spoke with
me before hitting Toronto for a special milk. event at the Orange Room.
The man knows his soul, r&b, jazz, and related contemporary sounds, and
has many a story to tell. Judging by the phone calls of appreciation
that flooded in following the interview, listeners loved the rather
lengthy dialogue. Look out for Bobís compilations on BBE, releases on
his own Chili Funk label, and for the East West Connection, the
production project (now band) that he and co-Chili Funkster Lofty have
led all the way to a second full-length album (coming soon).

Pick of the Week: Xen Cuts, the new, three-CD compilation celebrating
ten years of Ninja Tune-age. Truth be told, I was so excited by the 12"
EP preceding the collection that I dropped two tracks from it before
even owning the full, three-comp. affair. I do now, and itís all good,
bringing together rare Ninja Tune releases and remixes, with overlooked,
older gems and brand new beats ën pieces not found elsewhere. A must
have for any fans of the label, Xen Cuts is out on September 19. (P.S.
For those who need to know, Neptune is a collaboration between Jason
Swinscoe (Mr. Cinematic Orchestra) and bandmate Patrick Carpenter
(a.k.a. PC of DJ Food)). Yes, theyíve created a beautiful piece of
music.
Guest: Carlos Mondesir of Hot Stepper Productions stopped by for a
little bumpiní and hustliní as we discussed the Blueprints Festival
which brought folks like Roy Ayers, LAL, Panic, WOMB Dance Company, and
many others to the stages at Harbourfront Centre.
AndÖwe had an extra half hour to play with, so I had much fun getting
down with the cross-fader and doing up a wee bit of a mixed set, filled
with deep house and UK Garage grooves.
