You can rent rooms with shared bath in the hallway for $35 a night from
www.downtownrooms.com. They're clean and in decent neighborhoods. Not a
hotel. More like an furnished apartment. But small & economical.

For nu-jazz, try dub spot records on 12th between 1st and A.
For rare groove, fuhgeddaboutit, unless you're willing to drop the $$,
in which case I recommend the Sound Library (Ave A, around the corner from
Dub Spot), or A1 records on 6th St.

Also Rock & Soul records has a great selection of reissues and
bootlegs. Essential for those tracks you just have to have.
    They're on 35th & 7th Ave

    Peace,

    Nat
