Pick of the Week: Franceís Versatile label strikes again! After a wee
bit of an absence, the guys are back with one helluva compilation,
Versatile Family Album, celebrating their five years of existence. This
ainít no straight-up retrospective though (unless you count the
historical ëoverviewí found in the excellent, fun yet pointed liner
notes) as the Family Album contains beautiful new sounds created by
artists such as I:Cube and Gilbír (separately and together as Chateau
Flight), 4 Hero (a remix of Chateauís "Auto-Power"), Phil Asher (as
Focus), Domu & Volcov (as Rima), Pariss Clemons and others. Highly
recommended to those who seek out adventurous, forward-thinking sounds.

Pick of the Week: Nice Up the Dance, a beautiful collection of Studio
One roots reggae classics, found here in extended, '70s 'disco-mix'
form, available for the first time on CD. Roots, dub and even ska fans
will want to take note as the comp features heavyweights such as Cornell
Campbell, Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Tommy McCook, Delroy and Wilson,
Michigan and Smiley and others. Out now on Heartbeat/Universal.

Guest: Carlos Mondesir of Hot Stepper Productions dropped by to share
info about the then upcoming Garage 416 appearance of Joe Claussell. In
addition to bigging Joe up, we mixed up some tracks found on the
Nuphonic collection of Spiritual Life sweetness.

Pick of the Week: Ohmygosh was I excited to hear the debut album by
French duo Benjamin Sportes and Nicolas Kantorowicz! Known collectively
as Sporto Kantes (geddit?), these guys released a couple of earlier
singles that made my heart do a happy pitter-patter, as did their
contribution to the Catalogue labelís collection of last year. Act. 1 is
out now on Catalogue, and I canít say enough about the guysí
sample-happy, wide-eyed approach. Soul, reggae, dub, hip-hop and good
olí fashioned pop music meet here, all swirled in with straight-ahead
beats and a sensibility that suggest Sporto Kantes whistle while they
    work.

Guest: Kelly Langgard, exec director of the 14th annual Images Festival
of Independent Film and Video dropped by to share thoughts on week two
of the fest, which ended on Sunday April 22. There was much to discuss
as this yearís Images was bigger than ever, screening hundreds of shorts
and feature length works, hosting special programs and events as well as
the satellite Wide project, involving almost twenty installations found
in Toronto galleries and shop windows until April 28 (check
    www.imagesfestival.com for specifics).
