Well Nat you picked a good weekend...

Friday Night 8/31, Herbert is preforming live in the Smartbar (3730 N.
    Clark)!

Saturday Night (every week), The Sabretooth Quartet plays from 12am-5am for
$5 @ The Green Mill (One of the oldest jazz clubs around!). Its usually
organ, two sax players and a drummer. They are wicked!! Watch out...its
packed! At the corner of Lawrence and Broadway (This is a bit north)

Monday Night 9/3 Abstract Sessions@Smartbar (my night) is having a special
    breakdancing exhibition.

Just pick up a Chicago Reader and a New City and that should cover all of
    your bases.

    For record stores...

    Check out Groove Dis 1164 N. Milwakee...Sunday 12noon-3pm

Dusty Groove is right around the corner on Ashland (? someone there could
    tell you).

Gramaphone has tons of new house, techno and most things as well a good
    amount of stock.
This is the classic Chicago dance record store, a bit crowded for me though.
    North of Clark & Diversey

Weekend Records is one of those cool little stores that has a small amount
of stock, that's all good and I'll bet you've never heard of it before.
Focusing on German Techno, Tehc-house, Experimental, Electro and IDM. On
    Division between Ashland and Damen.

JAZZ RECORD MART If you are interested in jazz at all...this is the place to
go...perhaps the largest collesction fo jazz vinyl for sale...it
downtown...call information or look it up. not to be missed! very good
    prices for the used stuff.

    peace
