    :: news

    sorry about the delay with the newsletter, things have been busy!

    after a long break in transmission i am back on the airwaves again in the same time slot as always (TUESDAYS, 21h00-24h00) but under a different name. the programme that used to be THE FUSION FORMULA is now called HILIFE: but the eclectic flair of the fusion formula's programming remains.

    the name change does reflects common ground with the HILIFE COLLECTIVE: a freeform and eclectic group of sound artists and performers that will be initiated in the city soon. watch this space!

    weekly playlists for the show are available, mail me if you wish to receive them. if you're in cape town, tune in to UCT RADIO 104.5fm. the show will be streamed online, coming soon.

    saxophonist david poole, from breakfast included, and the enigmatic pecussionist syd voise joined me for a jam session at afribeat's IPANEMA NIGHTS on friday 29 june, at the curve, lower main road, obz. a glamorous but quite unruly night out. for video and full story, point your browser to www.afribeat.com/news_ipanemanights.html.

    :: sambafrique

    the press release says it all: "salsa freaks and headz d'afrique get down every saturday night at the curve, when the afro-latin groove shakes up the house.

    "from samba and salsa to juju jazz and mbaqanga, afrobeat, a dash of african hip hop and a little soul makossa: jools and bambaata keep it diggable with feel-it-in-your-feet sounds from latin america, africa and the diaspora."

    you better belive it! sambafrique has been growing from strength to strength, with an eye on the future and the past of afro-diaspora dance music.

    if you're in the city, come and visit at the curve bar, lower main road, observatory.

    :: sambafrique june 2001

    it's easy to guess what's at the top of my list this month. MARCOS VALLE "ESCAPE" :far out uk: has been garnering rave reviews everywhere, and works very well on the sambafrique dancefloor.

    i've been a bit slow on the new cubop releases, and they have some hot new material at the moment. in the meanwhile SNOWBOY "AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ" :cubop: is irreplacable for incendiary dancefloor material. snowboy's remix of UP, BUSTLE AND OUT "LOS CUBANOS LOCOS" :ninja tune: is a wild organ-driven slice of nuevo afro-cubana nirvana.

    african salsa has never sounded so good - AFRICANDO "MANDALI" :sterns: is unsurpassed for fiery, seductive dancefloor vibes; while there's nothing like the careening party atmosphere of plena as played by top puerto rican group PLENA LIBRE "MAS LIBRE" :rykolatino:

    on the afro side, except that they hail from brooklyn: ANTIBALAS "LIBERATION AFRO-BEAT" set up some great funk on their debut full-length for ninja tune.

    :: diggin'

    these are some of the gems i've found digging around in old record shops and hanging around greying jazz collectors. listen out for them on the show.

    percussionist DICK KHOZA "CHAPITA" :sun, 1976: brings an afro-funk feel to some of his definitively south african compositions on this album. recorded for sun records, a label run by dollar brand's one-time producer rashid vally. some beautiful work by kippie moeketsie, basil coetzee, and abdullah ibrahim himself has been released on the label, which also goes by the name of as-shams (arabic for sun).
