Check out a nice compilation called Arabesque on Gut records (london), from
the liner blurb: "an album which brings together contemporary as well as
traditional artists, celebrating the sounds of Noth Africa". Contains
tracks by Natacha Atlas, tranquillity bass, stereo mc's, and a whole lot of
North African artists who are new to me. One particularly fine track is a
remix by Hefner of a track called Shashkin by Omar Faruk Tekbilek. The disc
has very good liner notes on each artist, and would be a good introduction
(thats why I got it!). If you can't get it in oz, I got it from amazon uk,
cheap too (7-8 quid I think from memory).

More expensive (I got this one on sale at the local Borders) is the Nirvana
Lounge comp. by French dj Claude Challe, sort of a world music- with beats
on a chilled tip, not just North African, quite a lot of Indian stuff on
it. He's also done a couple of collections called Buddha Bar. The price is
a bit inflated I think, but if you spot it on special (or know someone in
    France!) get it.
