Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #68: Friendly neighbourhoods

    Newsflash 11.10.2001

    Dear friends,

Keyser is here again with the freshest news from Hungary, while in a few
sentences you can read the very first report of Shuriken from the South East
London area. If you also want to listen to my last weekly show reading the
playlist, do it fast as the next one will be just in a few hours. Sorry, but in
the next few months it will happen sometimes, because I have to finish my
university studies; so till January I will only do the radio show in every 2nd
or 3rd week, while our friend dj Leengum will make it on every other weeks.

Last week I had some nice old and new friends in town. First of all Gianluca,
the head of the Electrosacher nights in Trieste spent here a few days with his
girlfriend, Michela. Gianluca, who is addicted to not only the tasty Sacher
cakes but the dope downtempo grooves, gave me a CDR with some fresh tunes, what
he made with Tony, the owner of the best record shop of the nice North Italian
city. The melody of Electrosacher Project is just melting as a piece of
chocolate cake in your mouth. Well done, guys! I also had the chance to play
again with dj Bodoo from Pecs (South Hungary), who was a regular guest of the
show back in the days when we had our shows in every Sunday mornings. He is
pushing the biz really hard down there, and now you can also check out his shows
    on GFM radio (http://www.gfm.hu/musorok/volanrulez.html).

Big up to Gerry O'Rourke from London who also visited Budapest this weekend and
threw me with his labels' new Japanese compilation (DJ Mochizuki's Nu-Fusion
compilation is out on Foundation Music). You can also find his shows on the net:
    www.highergroundshow.co.uk.

And now... Shuriken's info bitz from London #1:

I spent the last few weeks with settling in South East London (a few weeks ago
this area was described by Paul Murphy as "pretty much what New York has been
like in the 1970s "). Now I am used to jeeps cruising with sound systems that
boom like nuclear assaults, rats playing in the rubbish by the doorway to my
home and police posters in shop windows seeking for witnesses of a knife-murder
that took place by the local supermarket at 7:24 AM (the weird timing pretty
much tells all about the vibes of New Cross, this friendly neighbourhood). At
least my college (Goldsmiths) is really cool, they feed me books about urban
culture by the tons to build my head.

After a few lonely nights, my girlfriend has arrived, and also local
djs/promoters did their best to make me feel at home. Big up again to Alan Brown
(the one and only Cukipapa) for introducing me to the London biz, Pete & Nigel
(the Pranksters), Gerry, Jamie (Jimpster) + Tom (Shur-I-Kan) + Helen for
treating me as a friend instead of a guest last week at Cargo, where Shur-I-Kan
did an amazing live set with his band. No question I'll be a regular
trainspotter at the Pranksters' monthly club-nights (absolutely friendly vibes,
great music, no big egos & attitudes), thanks for all the great guys at record
labels and distribution companies for hitting me with the good stuff (you know
who you are!). It really makes a difference to pick up a package of records from
my mailbox in these cold mornings. You guys make me feel a little bit at home in
this rushing oversized city. Thanks to Mr & Mrs Kerleta (Cosmic Sounds), for
their hospitality and sharing their ideas with me about London and music. Extra
thanks to Zeljko for taking me to a record fair!

Keep your heads up till next week!
