    Now some of yall will most likely scroll right past this since I will be talking about yet ANOTHER LIVE SHOW that I attended recently (and NOT A HOLLOGRAM).

    This was a LIVE PERFORMANCE by a singer that was one of the BEST BLOOD AND GUTS PERFORMANCES that I have seen in a while....

    So while the rest of you are enjoying your HOLLOGRAMS, those of you who are interested in LIVE MUSIC as well as a little BLACK HISTORY that was made recently can read on....

    This show actually took place over a month ago and I had a hard time figuring out just what to call my review of the show, here are some of the ideas that I kicked around...

    AFROS, CORNROWS & JUST PLAIN OL' NAPPY HEADS.....
    or
    SOME OF YOUR YOUNGER BROTHAS & SISTAS TURNED OUT JUST FINE

    This concert was actually a "CD Release party" for the new CD from Sandra St. Victor entitled:
    "Gemini: Both Sides"
    Now if the name Sandra St. Victor sounds just a wee bit familair to you, it should!
    The Dallas-born singer-songwriter has been captivating audiences with her special blend of R&B, pop, rock, gospel and jazz for over a decade now, first as a member of the innovative trio known as TheFamily Stand from 1988 to 1993 and then as a soulstress in her own right via her much-treasured 1996 Warner Brothers set, "Mack Diva Saves The World."

    Now let me tell ya something...
    SANDRA ST VICTOR IS FOR REAL
    She isn't one of these "cookie cutter neo soul (GOD HOW I HATE THAT TERM) singers", as stamped out by the CLIVE DAVIS MONEY MAKING MACHINE.

    Sandra St. Victor is an ACTUAL SOUL SINGER with a set of pipes that actually ROCKED THE HOUSE at SOB's on the night of August 17th 2001.

    * She's funky
    * She's soulful
    * She's funny
    * She rocks
    * She handles her "bidness" the way a Black woman should

    Go to the following link and listen to an extended set of perfomances by Sandra St. Victor from the NEW CD entitled "Gemini: Both Sides"
    http://www.sandrastvictor.com/radio.htm

    SEEING and HEARING Sandra St. Victor makes me think of how FUNK MUSIC may very well have evolved had the REAGAN/ATWATER/BUSH DICTATORSHIP not come to power in 1980.

    * Did she make me think of Chaka Khan?
    (yes she did)
    * Did she make me think of Aretha Franklin?
    (yes she did)
    * Did she make me think of Bessie Smith?
    (yes she did)
    * Did she make me think of Lyn Collins?
    (yes she did)
    * Did she make me think of Nina Simone?
    (yes she did)
    * Did she make me think of Betty Davis?
    (yes she did)

    I arrived on the scene just as the show started.
    and the club was packed and the scene that I observed there instantly made me smile
    What I saw in the audience was quite literally a sea of...
    AFROS, CORNROWS & JUST PLAIN OL' NAPPY HEADS.....

    This whole scene made me smile
    It made me feel like it was 1975
    What was best of all about seeing all of this "nappyness" in front of me was that most all of the folks there appeared to be about 10 years younger than I (in their mid to early 30's)

    I immediatly recalled Chris Rock's routine about being the "oldest brotha in the club..."
    lol
    However once I got past that, and started talking with the folks, it was clear to me that most of the people there had their heads screwed on the right way in many ways.
    Some of these folks are even subscribers to the Soul-Patrol Digest :)

    I just wanted to let all of you "OL' FUNKATEERS" out there know that...
    SOME OF YOUR YOUNGER BROTHAS & SISTAS TURNED OUT JUST FINE

    Some of them actually paid attention to the messages and the music of the 1970's and REJECTED much of what the world was serving up to them during the 1980's and 1990's
    These folks have not only caught that "universal groove" called "FUNK", but they have adopted it as a lifestyle that goes FAR BEYOND MUSIC.
    They have incorporated that "universal groove" into a lifestyle where "jazz, blues, rock, soul, gospel and hip hop" all coexist/blend with each other in "perfect harmony"

    It's what Lonnie Liston Smith called "kozmic funk" in the late 1970's
    It's what King Britt called the "kozmic lounge" in 1998

    Folks, artists like Sandra St. Victor, Carlton Smith (who we saw just a few weeks later, literally a few blocks away) and others such as Soul Element and the Hardaway Connection represent the future of OUR music!

    These are all artists that will BLOW YOU AWAY if you see them perform LIVE

    It sure was good to hang out and catch a glimpse of OUR musical future as influenecd by OUR musical past!

    I had been invited to the show by a SERIOUS (and foine) young woman named Sara Hill, who runs an organization in NYC called "SistaFactory".
    Sara has been a member of the Soul-Patrol mailing list for quite some time now and some of you out there may be familiar with the SistaFactory website at:
    http://www.sistafactory.com/
    Their site has been linked from our Soul-Patrol Members Link Page at:

    for quite a while now

    the S.I.S.T.A in Sistafactory is an acronym that stands for:
    Soulful Inspirational Sounds To Admire
    Founded in 1999 by Creator, Sara Hill, SISTA FACTORY quickly emerged as a leading performance series, which promotes and showcases diverse performing artists. These performers were selected for their ability to move audiences with the soulful essence of their music whether they are performing classic R&B, alternative, rock, jazz and gospel.
    "SISTA FACTORY is a forum that brings together diverse performing artists who are powerful in voice and spirit. We are committed to providing a platform where artists can perform bringing harmony and enjoyment to others. We feel their spirits and we are inspired."

    I encourage ALL of you to take a look at their website at:
