Mental Chatter Playlist: September 3, 2001
We crammed a lot into a shortened, Labour Day Monday, show. This is how
    we flowed…

Guest: Spot Records’ wonder child (Steph, don’t hate me for that
descrip!) Blissom stepped in to the studios for a chat and to play a
wee, wonderful set of jazz ‘n house goodness. A Toronto resident by way
of Paris and then Ottawa, Blissom has two high quality releases on local
label Spot Records. If you haven’t already heard his internationally
respected ‘n repeatedly rewound collaboration with Merkin, "Tag Team
Triangle," then you must. Ditto his remixes of Rise Ashen’s "Torn" and
"Second Wind." Have a listen to this show’s archive and check
http://www.spotrecords.net for a sense of his sound. He’s a totally
talented DJ as well; look out for his appearances ‘round town, including
at glide (Gypsy Co-op, 817 Queen St. W.) on Wednesday October 10 with
    Andrew Allsgood and myself.

    Picks of the Week:
As always when I’m away the week before, there were two:

Oneness of Juju: African Rhythms 1970-1982 (Strut): Wow. Probably like
many of you, I’d only ever heard a couple of Oneness of Juju classics
("Everywhere But Loose" and "African Rhythms") and even they hadn’t
prepped me for how intensely brilliant their music really was!
Thankfully, the funky folks at Strut hooked up with Oneness’ original
label Black Fire to put together this collection of classics, poetry,
solo recordings from band members and other unreleased works. This is
powerful stuff, no exaggeration. A must have for fans of jazz, avant
jazz, funk, politically motivated lyrics and poetry, Sun Ra etc.

Up, Bustle and Out and Richard Egües: Master Sessions 2 (Ninja Tune):
Similarly, I was totally engaged by the latest from the Up, Bustles.
It’s their second collaboration with Cuban flautist and orchestrator
Richard Egües, recorded in both Cuba and in UBO’s home of Bristol, UK,
and it’s just as beautiful as Master Sessions 1. Again there is a
companion book by Rupert Mould, ‘…of dark voices on salt air,’ plus much
to see and experience on the CD-ROM. The music speaks for itself, but
the added stimulation and education is a bonus!

Mental Chatter Playlist: September 10, 2001

Pick of the Week: Jah Wobble + Bill Laswell: Radioaxiom: A Dub
Transmission (Axiom/Palm) After almost a decade of collaborating on
various projects, bassists Wobble and Laswell finally spend enough time
in the studio together to concoct a full-length album. As fans of either
will know, the two are huge dub heads, often drawing on the music as a
source of inspiration and exploration. Dub is definitely the drug here,
with classic tools and techniques (delays, effects, reverb galore)
acting as an anchor. As usual, there are contributors galore, including
personal faves Graham Haynes and Nils Petter Molvaer, Nicky Skopelitis,
Sly Dunbar, Karsh Kale, Aiyb Dieng and others. I’m happy to report that
the results are magnificent, a relief for those of us who were beginning
to lose interest in Laswell after recent releases. Dubby, dreamy, and
    incredibly well-produced. Out now. http://www.palmpictures.com
