I guess I should do my research better before posting to this list!! ;-)

    >As a matter of fact, Mack the Knife from the 'Three Penny Opera' Music-Kurt
    >Weil Original lyrics-Berthold Brecht, ca. 1928 English lyrics-Marc
    >Blitzstein, 1959

"Now, Bobby Darin and Louie Armstrong they made a record, aw yes they did,
and now ella and her fellas they're makin' a wreck of Mack the Knife."

I was just going by the reference Ella made to Bobby and Louie, who I assume
(re)popularized the song during that time period (to a pop/jazz audience).

    >English lyrics-Marc Blitzstein, 1959

I'm also assuming this translation was for the Bobby Darin etc. performace.
So the english lyrics would have been quite new in 1960 when Ella in Berlin
was recorded. So I'm not completely off at least. I had never heard of the
song outside of American Jazz/Pop. this list is always so educational.

I wonder if Ella realized she was performing a song from a German
anti-capitalist opera in cold war Berlin or that Bobby & Louie just rhyme
    better than Kurt und Berthold.

    peace chris

ps. (OT) Speaking of Brecht...Everyone should see the brilliant film "The
Cradle Will Rock" with Tim robbins, hank Azaria, John Tuturo, bill Murray,
Joan Cusack, John Cusack etc. (sp?) ...Brecht's living ghost speaks to
Azaria as he writes an anti-capitalist musical...
