STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

I remember seeing Phil Asher DJ many years ago at a rather dubious (and now
long gone) Melbourne venue called Chasers. This was before he became
associated with "broken beat: the West London sound" and was simply rocking
the finest in soulful house music (with one killer hip hop instrumental
thrown in to thrill me and surprise the crowd). It was one of those nights
when I was running far too often between the dancefloor and the DJ booth to
find out what was on the turntables (ah, the glamorous life of the
trainspotter). Most of the tunes turned out to be white labels and by the
end of the night I had forgotten what they were all called. It seems
strangely appropriate then, that I don't have a tracklisting for the fine
mix Phil provided for last week's Stylin.

I also thought it was appropriate to bring him into Trainspotters' Corner.
The first single from his (as Focus) new longplayer "Sweet and Sour" is
called "Having Your Fun" and it features some piano chords based on a small
part of Fonda Rae's 1982 boogie classic "Over Like a Fat Rat". The Focus
album is out on Versatile now and two of the best cuts "Bamba" and "Sweet
and Sour" also provide trainspotter moments, the former being a cover of the
Dimenzio space fusion classic from Hungary and the latter using some horns
    from jazz-funker O'Donel Levy.

I'll be taking a little break from Stylin and Open Sesame for the next 2
weeks. You could say I need the time to concentrate on what will be in the
"Best of 2002" show when I get back. Anyone who goes to check out Gotan
Project at Honkytonks on Thursday, don't rub it in when I get back! And
Stylin will be wonderfully babysat by PJR, one of Melbourne's pioneers of
soul on radio through his work on PBS in the early 80s. Expect some hidden
gems from that era alongside the soulful house sounds he brings to RRR on
Saturday nights as part of the Underground Flavas program.
