Interesting points... I do some design work in the broadcast industry, and I
am always into album/music-related art. I do know that the most uninspired
artwork actually came from the Acid Jazz label itself; fortunately, the
music more than made up for the artwork's missteps. I would say that the
top designs come from a select few labels: Velour Records (especially the
Topaz and Kudu albums), Mo' Wax and Ninja Tune have both had some KILLER
album art (Cinematic Orchestra, anyone?), Eighteenth St. Lounge is always
unique, and Irma Records has some great stuff, too. Ubiquity Records' newer
releases have has some fine artwork on them, especially their compilations,
and the new As One LP. The best artwork I've seen so far, though, has to
come from the Mole label. Each album is different, but you can almost
immediately tell it is a Mole release just by looking at the cover. The
art/photography is gorgeous on every single cover I've seen. Just my humble
opinion...those Germans have really got it going on over there...
