    NEWS
I be tired of being sick, y'all...but that's been the happening in my
world these last few weeks. Since I rarely get sick, I've been whacked
quite hard. Because of that, I'm a bit behind with important projects
great and small. There's quite a bit to be done, and some delays at
present. Though I'm much better, this one-man operation has to return to
form. So expect things to take awhile longer.
Many of you are still awaiting the next installment about my European
trip. Since I haven't the time to proof what I've written so far, I will
put out maybe 2 or 3 parts in the forthcoming installment. I plan to
have the first series of pictures by that time. More soon.
A new show is now online...this time from last Friday, believe it or
not. Check the link further below, or visit the web site to hear it.
This week, I'm cranking out some long-overdue reviews. However, they are
going to be mostly on the short side until I'm fully functional and
caught up. But until then, this will have to do. I will also update the
reviews page of the web site in order to keep the reviews up-to-date.
Finally, some mix sets are in store in the coming weeks and months. I've
gotten heaps of them on the horizon, and more details on that are
    forthcoming.
As always, thanks to the artists, labels, and promo peeps for their
continued support. And thanks to all of you for your patience during
    this most pressing time.

    THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS
Kristian Schultze Set--Recreation (Crippled Dick Hot Wax!/Germany)
    Another classic reissue from the German label Crippled Dick Hot Wax;
this time from an outfit known as the Kristian Schultze Set. Originally
released in the 1970s (with two previously unreleased tracks), this is a
terrific album of spaced-out sounds and solid rare grooves that is so
timeless that it holds up rather well for its age. Go seek it.
Various Artists--Zero dB: Reconstruction (Fluid Ounce/UK)
Can I get a "holy shit" on this one?? Well, someone has beaten me to it.
But it's no exaggeration with how blown away I was after listening to
this collection of remixes from Chris Vogodo & Neil Combstock...the
amazing duo known as Zero dB. Not only have they've stirred up
incredible tunes of their own, but the remixes have been just as respected.
"Reconstruction," too, isn't an exaggeration. Not only have all of the
tracks been remastered by the boys themselves, but in some cases they've
done some major reworking of their own remixes. Perhaps one of the most
dramatic examples can be found on "E Ruim," the remix that ended up on
Grupo Batuque's "Rhythmix" remix collection last year. And if you
remember "Henry" from the "Reset" album of Peace Orchestra remixes,
you'll know the differences not long into this tune.
I can see it now that some purist are going to get in a tizzy over this
one. For me, "Reconstruction" is definitely a keeper to add to my
collection. I can't wait to snatch this one up on vinyl.
    Various Artists--Playlist (JCR/Compost)
This is a collection of tracks compiled by the six-member German
collective Jazzanova of previous releases through their JCR imprint.
From the dancey to the jazzy, if you're a Jazzanova fan then you should
know what to expect. Some classic tunes from the likes of Victor Davies
and the Underwolves going alongside lesser-known but no-less essential
gems from the Manfred Ludwig Sextet to the Theo Schumann Combo. Try it
for good measure and good music, and be in tune with the musical
influences that helped made JCR a most respected imprint.
Various Artists--Care In The Community: The Discerning Dancefloor (Codek)
Dope-as-hell collection of music from the label Care In The Community,
making its way stateside courtesy of New York's ever-reliable Codek
Records. If you know the funky variety of the label, then you're not
gonna be disappointed. Originally (and still) released in two volumes on
vinyl, the collection is now on CD for you to enjoy. Don't sleep on this
    gem!
    Various Artists--Fantastic Freeriding (Switchstance/Germany)
And speaking of gems, finally ended up with this solid collection of
many styles from the German-based label Switchstance Recordings. This
has been well talked-about in DJ circles since late last year, but you
surely don't need to be a DJ to enjoy this well-compiled collection.
    Various Artists--Rewind 2 (Ubiquity)
This is the follow-up to the well-received compilation put out by
Ubiquity last year of covers, remixes, and so forth from an esteemed
list of underground artists. And indeed, the list is
plenty...Yesterday's New Quintet, Roy Davis, Jr., Karen Krog (with some
help from Herbert), Terry Callier, Povo Povo (aka Povo), and many other
great acts covering classic songs, and doing the business with respect.
Respect indeed to Ubiquity for a worthy follow-up.
Various Artists--Future Sounds of Jazz 9 (Compost)
From Compost Records comes the latest volume in its long-running
"Future Sounds of Jazz" series, and no joke--one of the strongest
volumes in this series. Gonkyburg represents rather nicely, as Stateless
(aka Andreas Saag) drops a mad new one with some help from the terrific
B.L.E.S.S. (BLue-Eyed Soul Sisters), and you'll find Chris Berg's alias
Hird collaborating with Yukimi Nagano on "Keep You Kimi" (new vocal
version of "Keep Your Hird). Too many other great tunes to speak of, but
it really is worth your time to check out this nicely-compiled album.
    Joakim--Are You Vegetarian? (Versatile/France)
Fresh new 12" from Joakim, whose most recent single came in the form of
"Cotton Gun" from last year. Here, we get music from his forthcoming
long player, to be called "Fantomes?" In fact, the single starts off
with the album's title track that goes into an electro direction, with
altered vocals and spacey soundscapes thrown into the mix. Fresh!
