Facial muscles sore, Cuki jaw line out of synch with the rest of his 60
Kgs? Rib cage took a bit of a battering too! Laughter can sometimes
really hurt. But it's a good hurt, and one week of this hurt has ignited
the musical spirit of Pops and his close associates. Episodes of genuine
and sincere happiness, of long lost friends reunited, reunions of the
most respected artists, labels and distributors worldwide. This is the
diary of Cuki and the Soul Seduction crew at Midem/Cannes.
Day 1 (Saturday)
Meet up with the rest of the Gonzagagasse massive! Early airport
breakfast in Vienna, this the time I normally go to bed, not get up! We
do it Alitalia stylee as we go via Milano on our way to Nice. We would
have to dodge the dogs at Milan airport too, our midnight herbal
remedies wouldn't be understood we felt. We're Viennese you know! But
then again, we wouldn't understand why 99% of the Midem massive would
get so excited by 'Chasing the dragon' or 'Uncle Bob Marley', or 'Robbie
Williams' for that matter. We were always gonna be outsiders weren't we?
But then again, its the non conforming nature of our persona, and of who
we are, of what we want out of this life. Our music is the soundtrack
for crazy mad people who dig such things from their existence, we choose
to differ, Sun Ra was one of us, and you know that! And if cocaine is so
bloody fashionable, then you know we are gonna be doing something
completely different. It was a long day and everybody knows connections
suck, every single plane we flew was delayed, and one of them didn't
even take off! Probably coz it didn't arrive in the first place. Finally
make it to the Midem circus in the afternoon, where Pedro and Miguel
warm us up with new Spaceboys and Loopless albums. Cuki has to relieve
himself in Cafe Roma toilet because of this. Yo! takes nuff pictures of
French bunnies, and Cuki 'day dreamed' of candlelight dinners with Michi
from Stereo Deluxe. She would be here very soon. Instead, had dinner
with Frank from Head 2 Toe and the rest of the Irma mafia. Not quite the
same but still very enjoyable. Asked for my steak to be medium rare but
I'm sure I could see it still breathing. I'll go medium next time.
Mooooooooooo. Two Chupa Chups consumed and I have to share a bed with
the Yo!

Day 2 (Sunday)
Getting up at 8am is just alien to Pops! We set off to the circus tent,
but first we have to find the ultimate in croissants for breakfast. Boss
takes us on this momentous trip to find the best C's in town. Finally
found, and we set off in search of the Soul Seduction booth somewhere in
the Midem madness. We plaster our new home with pin ups of all our
favourite models. Patient K and Dr Richard take pride of place as does
Stereotyp, DSL and the many other fine artists we represent. And what
about the coffee? Well, every hour, on the hour, courtesy of the lovely
Pipi and Astrid. There is a place were every girl should have a tattoo
and Astrid came through with Cuki's favoured position. Think I'm gonna
need long sleeves for Astrid's art work this week? Cuki's nightmare
scenario of not having regular cups of java juice were dismissed with
the appearance of these two fine girls, two of Vienna's finest for sure.
Coffee wasn't always great, but the girls company would always be. Can't
believe it took me three days to ask "can I have your telephone number?"
Other things? First glimpse of Michi at Cafe Roma, Oh my God! Nearly had
to go the bathroom because of this. Thai dinner with Godfather Pandiani
at our base camp. Rocco showing off his abdominal muscles and the latest
offerings from Temposhere/Right Tempo. Three Chupa Chups consumed! All
good.

Day 3 (Monday)
Up again at 8-ish! This isn't easy for a nocturnal creature like the
Cuki. Yo! and his buddy seek out another top dog croissant for breaky.
Boss would have been proud of our choice of super choco flaky bizniz!
Yummy! Bumped into Jan from April records who hands me new white of Jol
with Plej, Quant and Swell mixes. Cuki has to relieve himself in the
bathroom of Cafe Roma once again! Yo!/Albanek signs his first
autographed 12", Cuki proud of his buddy and takes the pic. Bumped into
Mr Reinboth who hands me new Voom:Voom white and FSOJ 9 CD-R, nice that
Hird, Ernesto's and Stateless read 1, 2 and 3 on this. Cuki has to
relieve himself on the spot! ecco.chamber team are here, they would be
busy as word got around they got hot biscuits arriving in the 03. Oven
gloves are giving out with ecco.chamber CD-R's from now on! Bumped into
Arnaud from Ya Basta who hands me Pepe Braddock remix of Gotan Project,
running out of nappies! Bladder is killing me, ouch! Dinner with
Discograph posse who are hilarious and happy to finally meet the Cuki
after all these years. Steak supper still alive and is winking at me
this time! Gonna have to go 'bein cuit' next time. Still better then the
marinated shark in yellow liquid they had! Hope the Icelandic was worth
it guys! Three Chupa Chups consumed.

Day 4 (Tuesday)
Busy day at the booth with Astrid showing plenty of tattoo and Cuki
spending much time relieving himself and sucking Chupa Chups. Later we
entertain the Timewarp posse at our favourite little bistro. Steak
appears on my plate half alive again, but I'm getting used to my new
cannibalistic ways. Anyway, real fun begins with our visit to Jimmy's
bar in the evening where Will Quantic and Chris Vogoda are funking it
up. A small family of renegade music lovers gathered, and smiling was
always going to be our true joy this night. Selling records would always
be secondary, until that is, we get our credit card bills at the end of
next month. For sure, our week at Midem would be different, Dizzy
Gillespie and Moonstarr speaking to each other on the decks? Once again,
we realised it was all music, and along with the smiling and laughter,
we could also dance to this music. Dizzy would have been proud I can
tell you. Kevin Moon would have probably been even prouder. It seems we
took a turn to the left and we didn't look back! But one day, they will
stop looking at us as renegades and outsiders and lefties, and look at
us more like hero's and leaders who kept a scene alive and believed in
the truth of independent music and dance. We don't follow fashion, you
know that too! And BTW, if you see Lea dance, then you better have a
hanky or a really long sleeve ready to catch the saliva my friend? Mmmm!
Asked If I knew a certain Cukipapa, this here anti hero replied "no idea
sir, I'm just a croissant consultant and salesman". See, we got big
ones, bambino ones, chocolate ones, ones with flaky pastry, ones with
not so flaky pastry. Get the picture? The stranger went away in search
of the illusive Mr Boots, will he ever find him? And what about Kenny
from Southpark? Check the new and forthcoming Ya Basta bullets to
understand why he and that man Claude are so excited. Claude, now we
now? No wonder Michi's tongue was popping out for a look every know and
then! Either that or the hot tuna's that Mr Vogodo and Will Q were
dropping that night. Anyway, talking about awesome abdominal muscles.
Godfather Rocco Pandiani showed some mafia style moves on the dance
floor. With Lea from Compost and Rocco from Easy Tempo on the floor, we
had old meeting new, and somehow it all felt all good and proper. Michi
nicked my last Chupa Chup at the party (she's allowed to) and we all
left Jimmy's highly satisfied.

Day 5 (Wednesday)
Me and Hergo finally get to meet Steffi and Anja from Public Propaganda.
We discuss the sanity of Mocky when he made 'In Mesopotamia' and other
things related to music. Olive green condoms, airline radio shows and
beer mats to name just a few. Steffi gives Cuki copy of new Voom:Voom
twelve (another one!). This time the Yo! would be relieving himself when
I give my buddy this later! Steffi hands me new Rima twelve too, my legs
are so tightly crossed, I think I am turning into a woman. This Midem
malarkey is kinda cool but painful for the bladder. Cuki gives Steffi a
copy of Destination: Out. and hopes she will enjoy. Cool that
distributors are happy and proud with what they have to work with. I
know that feeling too. It's Empress Kaisa's birthday so off to the
Compost booth to offer chocolates, a card and solitary rose. Found her
sucking on a Chupa Chup, knew this girl had class! Either that or I left
one there yesterday! Cuki Kaisa returns gift and gives me the wonderful
Compost 5xCD boxset. I felt like it was my birthday! I really knew I was
amongst good people this day. So anyway, we say once again, happy
birthday Empress K, we are indeed fuelled for the future, stay forever
lovely my dear friend. One look at the boxset and Cuki has to go the
bathroom (again)! Next up, DJ Kraze visits the Soul Seduction booth,
checks the poster of K&D and informs me that "one million is his kinda
numbers". Cuki gets to listen to his new mix CD and after one minute
says "two". Kraze lights up like a Christmas tree and replies "what, two
million", Cuki hits back with "no, just two", "no millions, or
thousands, or hundreds, just two" Something's even the Cuki can't sell!
Better still was to come! Maria from Oslo, slightly drunk but still too
damn gorgeous to dismiss. Finger nails that caused another rush to the
bathroom. We hope she is in contact very soon. Later we grab dinner with
Christophe from F Comm, and the ecco.chamber team. Tomato mozzarella
salad makes a welcome change to live animals! Even later, we do the
Martinez leaving party which is full of idiots and peeps who no nout
about music. Thankfully, musical family friends and Chupa Chups make
this party more bearable.

Day 6 (Thursday)
Last proper day and no meetings planned, a day of relaxing and
unwinding. We hit the beach were we find Michi and SD crew. Both Cuki
and Yo! cameras work over time to get last decent pics of Michi before
we separate. No toilets nearby, bladder is bursting! We are joined by
Compost crew, Ya Basta crew, Gareth from Preston North End, and some
others who I have no idea who they are. We soak in the sound of the
waves and the warmth of the sun. We wished each other happy times ahead
and there was a sincerity in all words said. Our small family unity
strong in its belief in quality and diverse music. Kenny couldn't take
his shirt off coz Michi would have lost the plot we think. Lea, showed
off her designer Compost outfit, the Yo! skied on sand and Gareth gave
us the low down on PNE. Dinner with Michi! YES! Unfortunately joined
also with the whole Soul Seduction and Stereo Deluxe crews. Damn! There
were candles too. Nice people from Nurnberg cooked us dinner and Spag
Bol made another pleasant change from half dead cows and croissants.
Michi left us with smiles and happiness extended beyond anything we felt
for a long time. Some peeps light up lives! Stereo Deluxe gotta a whole
heap of peeps who do just that. I swear I could feel Oli smiling with
us. Lost count of Chupa Chups consumed! We did miss the other party
though. The private Public Propaganda pyjama party, and with our herbal
remedies that the dogs at Milan airport didn't know about. Talk of open
fires, pyjamas, Destination Out playing in the background, how could we
ever forgive the Yo! for tossing the wrong side of the coin. We do
though coz we luv his boots and he is the Yo!. We'll see you soon Anja
and Steffi ..........to be continued. You bet! Finally, will our music
ever be fashionable? I don't think so. Lets hope not anyway! And why is
this? Well, probably coz we just keep moving on into directions and
territories that even we do not know exist. fashion could never keep up
with us. Maybe that's what makes us so special. Now, where's my
croissant?
