STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all
It was part 2 of the Stylin focus on Philly last week, with ?uestlove -
drummer for the Roots - dropping in for a chat and guest DJ mix. On hearing
that Jazzy Jeff had come in the previous week, he waxed lyrical about Jeff's
skills and called him the "Charlie Parker of DJing". When I asked who that
made him, he said "Kenny G"! Well Kenny ?uestlove came through with a kind
of "roots of the Roots" set of 80s hip hop classics, with many tunes that
were a central part of my musical history too, through Melbourne radio shows
like RRR's "Wheels of Steel". ?uestlove and the band have gone home now, but
judging by how quickly their show sold out (4 hours!) I think they'll be
back before too long. One of the interesting points he made during our chat
was that the Roots are now the last black band (in the sense of
instrument-playing band) signed to a major label in the US.

Tonight at Honkytonks and tomorrow on Stylin, I'll be joined by top Kiwi
spinner Chris Cox, whose production outfit Thisinformation did the very
Stylin tune "Galaxy Blues" a little while back. Chris will be shortly
dropping a mix CD on Mark de Clive-Lowe's Antipodean label and will have
giveaways from the label tonight. Also joining us tonight will be Dave
Wright, who played the keys on "Galaxy Blues".
